Amsterdam Law Forum

The Amsterdam Law Forum (hereafter, A.L.F.) is an online journal of the Law Faculty in particular, and the VU in general. The A.L.F. strives to offer an online platform for legal and policy commentary articles, with an academic character, yet accessible to a broader public, and furthermore serve as a forum for academic publications by young legal scholars as well as literary reviews. The journal comprises three parts:

Opinion Articles

This section offers publications by legal scholars in fields of contemporary international, European and comparative law, (e.g., academics, politicians and legal practitioners, as well as our own editorial board), contributing to important public debates with provocative and meaningful dialog. Because of this characteristics, publications in this section are relatively short, nearly without footnotes and therefore accessible to a broad public. Opinion pieces are editorial, rather than scientific in nature, and aimed at a broadest audience among the three sections of the journal, as should be reflected by relative brevity with respect to length and citation.

Scientific Papers

This section comprises scientific papers as researched and written by selected lecturers, students and other stakeholders, depending on the theme/ topic at hand. The editorial board intends to develop close ties across the VU Law Faculty, offering a podium and providing further impetus for the research going forward within the institution. Moreover, the editorial board strives for a symbiotic relationship whereby the A.L.F. is directly involved in symposia and seminars, publishing the most important contributions by faculty, guests and students alike. Furthermore, the A.L.F. offers a podium for innovative publications of both master students and Phd-students from within the faculty as well as from outside.

Literary Reviews

The literary review section will feature a diverse variety of reviews of both contemporary and historic texts. This will offer a traditional opportunity for editors and contributing authors to comment on both cutting edge scholarship and significant underpinnings of the relevant fields of law. In order to make publishing in this section more attractive for academics, the A.L.F. will introduce ‘book review articles’ in which several books will be discussed simultaneously. The editorial board furthermore invites scholars to write annotations for important land mark cases and discuss historical events related to the theme of the issue.
